Lewis Designs Custom Cabinetry was founded in Dublin, Ohio in 1989 by Ron Lewis. The business is now led by his son Oliver. In more than three decades we've built and installed custom cabinetry in hundreds of homes across the Columbus metro, from Dublin and Upper Arlington to Powell, Worthington, Delaware, and everywhere in between. Over those years, certain things have proven consistently true.
1. The Best Clients Know What They Want and What They Don't
The homeowners who end up most satisfied with their projects are rarely the ones with the most fully formed design vision at the start. They're the ones who come in knowing how they use their space, what frustrates them about it now, and what they don't want to compromise on. That clarity around function, priorities, and non-negotiables is more useful in a design consultation than a Pinterest board. We can develop the aesthetic from there. We can't substitute for knowing how you live.
2. Layout Decisions Matter More Than Finish Decisions
After 35 years and 500+ projects, the pattern is clear: the homeowners who regret their renovations almost always regret a layout decision, not a finish choice. The finish they picked turned out fine. But the island is two inches too short, or the refrigerator placement creates a traffic problem, or there's not enough landing space next to the range. These decisions happen in the design phase and they're expensive to change later. Spending more time on layout, even slowing down the process to think through how the space actually works, pays dividends for decades.
3. Quality Is Visible Eventually
A homeowner who saved money by choosing a less expensive cabinet shop will usually know they made that choice within five to seven years. The finish starts to chip. The drawer boxes start to loosen. The boxes themselves swell or rack slightly. None of this happens on day one, which is why budget decisions in cabinetry can feel deceptively safe. The quality of the underlying construction isn't visible when the cabinet is new. It becomes very visible when the cabinet is old.
4. Central Ohio Homeowners Are Specific About What They Want
Over three decades, we've noticed that homeowners in the Columbus metro, particularly in communities like Worthington, Upper Arlington, Dublin, and New Albany, are more research-informed and more specific in their expectations than they were twenty years ago. They've looked at more kitchens, they know more terminology, and they have a clearer sense of what they're looking for. We take that as a compliment. Informed clients ask better questions and end up with better outcomes.
5. The Relationship Matters as Much as the Product
Custom cabinetry is a five-to-six-month relationship between a homeowner and a shop. The quality of that relationship, the communication, the responsiveness, the willingness to work through problems transparently, affects the experience as much as the quality of the finished cabinets. At Lewis Designs, the reason many of our clients return for second and third projects and refer their neighbors is not only the finished product. It's how the process felt. That's something we've worked to protect for 35 years.
Still Learning
Ron Lewis started this business with a commitment to craftsmanship and personal service. Oliver continues it with the same commitment, and with the perspective that comes from growing up in the trade. After 35 years, we're still building relationships with new clients across Central Ohio and still learning, project by project, what it means to build something well.
Contact Lewis Designs to schedule a complimentary in-home consultation and become part of that tradition.
